"Tragedy for family and friends of Scott Wallace is now to benefit many children in a poor rural area of The Gambia.
Following Scott's early death in November 2008, his father decided to fulfil
a dream of his son's, Prior to his sudden death, Scott's interest in The
Gambian Schools Trust had triggered a plan to go to The Gambia and help with
their work. Money generously donated in Scott's memory, is now going to be
used to build a school at Jamwelly. This site was selected from several
carefully considered possibilities and will provide education for children
from six villages, which are at present without any school.
The land for the new school has been donated by the local Alkelo and was
handed over to the charity in April, with a wonderful ceremony and big
welcome from the villagers. It was attended by all the local Alkelos and the
Seifou (area chief). Building will commence in November 2011, following
the same design as Naata and Kumbija and should be finished by early
February, and ready to receive its first eager students.
Our sincere thanks to Scott's family for making this possible.
“A fitting memorial to a very special man."
The school at Jamwelly was opened on February 11, 2012 with a grand ceremony attended by over 20 trustees and visitors from the UK.There are now 150 pupils with 3 teachers. The grounds have been cultivated and vegetable growing has started.
