We were told about the school at Nemesu - known to visitors as Haywards - in the middle of 2007. When we visited the school we found 66 children cramped in a tiny room. They had no equipment other than the benches they were squashed onto. The local family from whom the room was being rented were anxious to have it back for their own use.
The Trust's usual approach of refurbishing, repairing and re-equipping was plainly inadequate in this situation.
As a result, we have decided to build a new school for the village from scratch. Land for the project has already been identified and purchased. Our long-term aim is to build a two classroom block, with toilets and a storeroom.
Work is now completed and the village has a brand new school, built by The Trust. It was opened with an official ceremony in May: the ceremony was attended by local officials, teachers, representatives of The Trust and, most excited of all, the children whose school it will be.
